However, sometimes it happens that you don't have everything under control. The same goes for your business listing on Google. The photo that is shown first when you (or your customers) search for your company cannot always be as current and representative. This is how customers see your company

If you regularly Google your own company name, you will see how your company is displayed on Google to your (potential) customers. Such a search usually shows a number of search results on the left, and a large prominent mention of your company on the right. In the example below you can see how the company “Van Eert Accountants & Adviseurs” is displayed online. Immediately the entry on the right stands out. It is striking that the photo of the business listing is not particularly representative. As a potential customer, you may expect a photo of the building, the company logo or the team. The photo should initially convince you as a user by clicking to, for example, the website, and then making an appointment there. Particularly annoying if there is an image that you have not chosen yourself. Even more annoying if you've tried several times to delete or edit that image on Google.

This is how an image is chosen on Google

A photo for a business listing can be chosen in various ways. Broadly speaking, there are 3 ways in which the first photo is determined, which are Google Street view, customers who upload a photo and business owners who upload a photo. Use online reputation management tools to maintain online goggle reviews.

1. Google Street View

If a company has only recently existed on Google, and has therefore probably also recently been registered in the Chamber of Commerce, a 360-degree photo of Google Streetview is often shown. Google Streetview is a service from Google that basically maps the entire world by means of photo material. There are continuous Google cars driving around with a 360 degree camera on the roof. With that camera images are made of all streets, houses and buildings. If Google still can't find enough information about the company in question, the photos taken by these cars will be consulted. This gives a user an idea of the company and makes it easier to recognize the location.

2. Customers upload photos

If your company has been around for a little longer, chances are you have regular customers. Those customers can then take photos of your business that they can add to Google. Google encourages this through push notifications on mobile devices after you visit a business. As a user, you can even earn points when you write reviews and upload photos by participating in the Google Local Guides program. These push notifications are particularly common in the hospitality industry. You probably recognize that, after you have had a delicious meal in a restaurant, you will at some point receive a push notification asking how you liked it and whether you want to share your opinion on Google Maps. If you also took pictures of your dishes during dinner, chances are Google will even ask you to upload those pictures to Google Maps. If your photo is good enough, that photo can be shown as the first photo on Google for your company.

3. Business owner uploads photos

Fortunately, as a business owner, you can influence your business listing. However, you have a lot more control when you have claimed your business listing on Google . If you haven't already, we recommend that you do so as soon as possible! As a business owner, you can manage all business information in Google My Business (or Google My Business), including the photos and images shown for your business on Google. A photo uploaded by a business owner is much more likely to be shown as the first photo.

Adjust photo or image on Google

Now that you know how it is determined in which ways a photo is shown for your business listing, you naturally want to know how you can adjust that first non-representative photo on Google. You have the best chance of adjusting that photo by using Google My Business. You can adjust the photo on Google as follows:

  1. Go to  https://www.google.nl/business/
  2. Click on your company (if you have not yet claimed your company, you can read how to do that here )
  3. Go to “photos”
  4. Click on the blue plus sign at the top right and upload one or more photos
  5. Click on “cover” and select the best photo that you want to be the first photo shown on Google. Click here to get more reviews on google

Delete photo or image on Google

Of course it can happen that you want to remove a photo or image on Google, because it does not fit your company at all, for example. You may also want to delete such a photo because it is no longer current. Unfortunately, actually deleting a photo isn't as easy as adding a photo (as with everything on Google). The greatest chance of getting a photo removed is by going to Google My Business again and removing the photo in question. How to delete that photo on Google:

  1. Go to  https://www.google.com/business/
  2. Click on your company (if you have not yet claimed your company, you can read how to do that here )
  3. Go to “photos”
  4. Click on the photo you want removed
  5. Click on the flag at the top right
  6. Indicate the reason why you want to delete the photo in question and submit the form

If this doesn't work, you can also try to contact the owner of the photo directly. If you click on a photo, you will see who took that photo in the top left corner. When you click on that user's name, you will be taken to his/her Google Local Guides profile. You may find more information about the person in question there.

Some tips

By following the steps above you can adjust or even delete a photo or image of your company on Google. Google wouldn't be Google if there were a number of snags to this. Google is the one that ultimately determines which information (and thus photos) is shown on the internet. We do have a number of tips that can ensure that you are shown the right photo:

  • Always use Google My Business (Google My Business)
  • Upload very good quality photos (high resolution, nice colors, etc.)
  • Logos or a lot of text on an image works poorly. These photos are almost never shown as the first photo on Google.
  • A photo of the front of the building or a nice photo that shows a lot of the inside of the company works well.
  • Choose a landscape photo instead of a portrait.
  • Ask a Google Local Guide to take pictures. Local Guides with a high ranking often have more influence, his/her photos are shown as the first photo on Google faster.
