With 2 reviews already stars in Google: get started with your reviews!

Don't have any stars in Google yet?

Okay, check it right away (if you don't know yet): google your company name or business activity and see if your company has stars in Google. If that is not yet the case, then you really have to get started to get reviews in Google. The stars have already been shown in 2 reviews since the beginning of February 2017. That has advantages and disadvantages. In this article you can read the pros and cons and of course more about the phenomenon of stars in Google.

UPDATE 8 February 2020:  stars have even been seen at companies with 1 Google review. More about this as a supplement at the bottom of this article.

From 5 to 2 reviews

Previously, you needed 5 reviews to display the average star rating in Google. These stars came from your reviews in Google, via Google My Business . It was just as hard to get noticed by those stars in your business listing. You were then ahead of many competitors, because to this day there are still few companies that really received quite a few reviews. There are some exceptions, including supermarkets and restaurants, which seem to get reviews on their own.

With fewer reviews already stars?

On February 4, 2017, a message came by on Facebook from a proud business owner who saw the stars in Google. What struck me was that there was  (3)  behind the reviews. So only 3 reviews were given, while stars had been 'handed out'. Special, because I knew that the stars were displayed from 5 reviews. That was also a reason to always encourage my customers to collect reviews.

On Research: How Many Reviews Do You Need Now?

Almost at the same time as this “discovery” a message came by on Twitter, referring to an article that also deals with this . There was talk about 3 reviews, I thought it was smart to first find out if 3 was the minimum or maybe 2 reviews were already sufficient. And yes, just search and I came across them:

Also for your Knowledge Panel  , 2 reviews are now sufficient. It was not entirely coincidental that I checked the advertisement agency 'Flawless' for this. in Apeldoorn . For those who don't know: Flawless. designed the logo of Letterzaken and does a lot of graphic design for me. And for him I also keep an eye on the positions. So I checked what his Knowledge Panel looks like now:

And see there: 5 stars from 2 Google reviews. This change from Google, as I already announced, has its pros and cons. Weigh them carefully for your company.

The advantages

The advantages are hard to guess:

  • You have stars faster with your company in Google, so;
  • You stand out more quickly in the local search results

You could have thought of them yourself. However? ;-)

The cons

I think the disadvantages are a bit more serious:

  1. Your competitors get stars more easily in Google
  2. You have to work harder to stand out in the local search results (more reviews, higher average)
  3. Statistically, an average based on a few reviews says very little

Where previously it was not so obvious to see stars in the Local Pack, it will now become more common. If you already had 5 or more reviews, your competitors will now have stars more quickly. With more companies that have stars, those stars are less likely to stand out and you are therefore less unique. So you have to try harder, because more reviews and a high average are going to make the difference.

Build your lead now

You can conclude that you now have to work even harder to distinguish yourself from your competitors. More reviews and as high an average as possible, because that is going to be the factor that your potential customers will pay attention to. If (almost) everyone has stars, you make the difference with the number of reviews and with the average. Because if you had to choose between a company with an average of 4.2 stars and one with 4.8 stars, which company would you choose?

In this example, the difference is even more extreme. Which driving school would you choose from the 3 local listings in the Local Finder?

UPDATE: even 1 review with stars

With some searching on Google, I even found a company on February 8, 2017 that already received the stars with 1 review. Whether this is an experiment or definitive remains to be seen. It is clear that something is happening around the Google reviews. Have you also seen stars at companies with 1 review? Let us know by leaving the company name in a comment.

So get started!

You see, there's work to be done. Build your lead now. Get started to receive your reviews. Read the two articles I already wrote about it and take advantage of it:
