What are good reviews for Google? Reviews as a local SEO strategy

What is a good review?   And what are the 10 most important ranking factors of (Google) reviews on the internet? If you sell products or rent out items locally, for example, reviews via the Google search engine work extra well to attract more local website traffic.

Therefore improve your 'local SEO' via reviews, it concerns more web visitors coming from your place or region. It is a fact of experience within SMEs that people like to do business with people who have a company within a radius of 25 kilometers. Despite the fierce competition on the internet, you can always improve your local SEO by actively collecting good reviews from (real!) Customers and buyers.

Google search engine optimization through good reviews

SEO means 'Google search engine optimization'. And reviews work really well locally. Read what good reviews are in this post. Prevent false or invalid reviews! Reviews as an SEO strategy have been recommended to me by  Edwin Bron (Springmedia)  and The Feedback Company. As a first tip, they recommend every website owner to set up a Google My Business account.

Collect good reviews for local SEO

Reviews are 33% decisive for your score in Google local (Local SEO). That is why good use of it makes your content score higher in Google. Also, see my full Google SEO tutorial. What requirements must a good review meet, so that Google will consider and show it? It is a fact that more people click (up to 15% more) on Google search results with good reviews. These reviews stand out because there are yellow stars so that people click on them. When you have more than 100 reviews, it is also possible to show these 'five stars' within Adwords search results, which saves real money.

10 most important ranking factors of (Google) reviews

In decreasing importance, these are the ranking factors for reviews on the internet:

  1. reviews with relevant keyword (s) (the number and percentage)
  2. reviews containing the city name (the number and percentage)
  3. the number of Google reviews given
  4. the average increase in annual reviews
  5. the average increase in monthly reviews
  6. the average increase in weekly reviews
  7. share and percentage of reviews that have been responded to (interaction)
  8. share and percentage of reviews that were not responded to (or needed to be)
  9. use of photos in the reviews
  10. share of negative reviews and/or share of which have not been responded to (this lowers your score)

SEO software tip: Via the SE Ranking tool you can have your website crawled on a weekly basis (budget) for these types of aspects.

Reviews as part of a local findability strategy

Collecting reviews provides better local findability but is only one part of your entire strategy to be findable online as a company. Pim Broekstra writes in his blog about SEO marketing that there are two more aspects to pay attention to the online distribution of NAP data (Name, address, location of your company) and the collection of listings on local business directories and local websites.

Tips for good reviews on Google/internet:

What are the good reviews? Note these points:

  1. Only collect authentic stories and credible responses, ask satisfied customers to review your website or product
  2. If you want more customers, avoid exaggerated reviews, such as “the restaurant with the best food ever”, because then you will quickly get negative or bad reviews about you. People who come to your business shouldn't expect too much either. In principle, you should also be able to live up to your good reviews almost daily.
  3. Make sure that the correct keywords/keywords are used in the reviews, but do not force this. It must remain authentic.
  4. How you ask customers for positive reviews is a matter of the correct procedure: only ask for the review when your product/service has actually been delivered (well and truly).
  5. Technical: Do not write or submit reviews yourself, unless you are very smart, because if this always happens in the same way (style), Google will notice.
  6. Technical: Provide a spread in email senders (avoid that the same email addresses are the sender of reviews)
  7. Technical: Ensure spread in IP addresses: ensure a natural distribution of locations and PCs/devices on which the good reviews are entered

Google Register my company or delete an account?

It is wise to register Google My Business. So that you appear well in Google. With a website and telephone number. Negative reviews on Google My Business will always persist, even if they have been incorrectly given by strangers. For some entrepreneurs, this is a reason to no longer be listed on Google My Business. Thomas Lappere (Bloeise) gives instructions on how to undo this Google business listing, see his Google review guide:  Delete Google My Business.

Google review tool | Positive reviews and negative reviews

Google review tool: Google has its own review tool in which Google also collects positive reviews about your services or products. It is very difficult to get rid of very negative reviews from Google. Google does not do anything with requests to have Google reviews removed. There are, however, independent Google certified companies, such as the Feedback company, that can manage the good reviews about your website, where it is easier, as a website owner, to have bad reviews removed. This gives you 5 days to make up for a negative review with your customer, and the customer can adjust the review. What you can always do yourself anyway is quickly provide new reviews that are positive, so that these good reviews push the negative reviews down on the web page where they are.
